Research by walking

My name is Harry den Hartog and in this blog I will share some impressions of my walking research in the rural areas of Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces, China. The focus is especially on Zhejiang, which is a national pilot province for rural and regional revitalization strategies. Here we can find the first results of China’s recent common prosperity initiative, aimed at reducing the urban-rural divide and to strengthen social and economic equality. This research makes part of a research by the Abe Bonnema Chair at TU Delft (also see this blog in Dutch), aimed to discover alternative futures for rural villages and small towns near metropolitan regions.

Walking is the primary method for our research, allowing us to experience landscapes and settlements firsthand. It helps to listen to local stories and uncover hidden values. This approach encourages slowing down, aimed to find alternatives to overconsumption of rural areas. We walk in pairs, enabling personal conversations about the past, present, and future of the areas we pass. If you feel connected with exemplary places of rural revitalization in your current or former hometown, workplace, etc. in Zhejiang (or Jiangsu), feel free to contact me to join and guide me.

This research isn’t focused on statistics, but to give a sense, I’ve already walked above 1500 kilometers, covering over 200 small rural settlements whith unique local (walking) companions, and additionally experienced many spontaneous encounters with people on site from all walks of life. Each walk lasts about 4 hours, covering 8-18 kilometers. The posted blogs here are not chronological, they don’t follow a set timeline or route. This walking project started in the Summer of 2023. Most posts blend reflections from earlier months with current new insights and future perspectives.
